Rockstar Workers File to Unionize Before GTA 6

Rockstar staff filed for union recognition on June 30, with crunch and pay allegations surfacing before GTA 6 ships.

The people making GTA 6 are organizing, and the timing is pointed. On June 30, the IWGB union said it filed for formal recognition of the Rockstar Game Workers Union, asking the company to negotiate over conditions well before the November launch.

Background matters here. The push follows the dismissal of a group of Rockstar staff last year, workers the union says were let go during organizing. Rockstar has said the firings were over leaks. Legal action is underway, with a court date confirmed.

Current and former staff have gone public with specific complaints. In interviews with Game Developer, anonymous members described a pay structure leaning heavily on discretionary bonuses, which they say lets managers pressure people into crunch because refusing can shrink a payout. They also pointed to a standard contract clause opting workers out of UK working-time limits, plus a return-to-office push that ended hybrid arrangements. Reporting has raised gender pay gap concerns as well.

These are worker allegations, not findings, and Rockstar disputes the framing around the firings. Even so, the union has said strike action is on the table if the company refuses to recognize it voluntarily.

None of this is likely to move the release date. It does complicate the clean success story around the biggest launch in the medium, and it is worth watching whether recognition, a settlement, or a walkout lands before players reach Leonida.
