No Disc in the Box: Retailers Balk at GTA 6

The lack of a disc has become GTA 6's first real controversy. When Rockstar confirmed the $80 price, it also confirmed that boxed copies contain a download code and nothing else, making the game digital-only at launch.

Some retailers are not playing along. Video Games Plus, a North American chain that has sold games for more than thirty years, said it will not stock GTA 6 until a real disc exists. At least one other physical-media shop has taken the same stance.

Rockstar's response has been muddy. A support email sent to customers who asked about discs said a physical copy would be available in the following months, but the message never uses the word disc, and it may be auto-generated. Treat the idea of a later disc release as unconfirmed until Rockstar says so on the record. One industry insider has floated December, which is a rumor, not a date.

There is a business logic here. A code in a box cannot be traded in or resold used, which keeps GameStop and similar stores from moving secondhand copies without cutting Rockstar in. Reducing leaks from early disc pressings is the other likely motive.

For players who like shelves of games they own, this stings. The practical takeaway for now: if you want GTA 6 on November 19, plan on a digital purchase or a boxed code, because a disc you can lend or resell is not confirmed to exist.
